I love coming up with ideas and then getting stuck into the (slightly..) harder task of communicating them. I lean towards humour and empathy in my creative, to tell stories people can connect with.
I tried a few things before getting into copywriting, and they all added a little something to the way I work. My linguistics degree gave me word-nerd legitimacy whereas my time as a postie gave me the discipline of 5am reality. I learnt behaviour change from my Masters in Teaching, and nurtured my pedantic level of attention to detail while writing in public policy.
After all that, the draw of creative work finally overpowered the yoke of ‘a good stable government job’ and (with the help of WikiHow) I won a short film competition. Much fun was had and it spurred me to apply for AWARD School. Which wasn’t in Canberra, but 20 hours a week of bussing to Sydney and back. All to learn that advertising’s deceptively simple
insight-idea-execution structure is just that—a deceptive ruse designed to enthral you into never giving up on trying to crack that brief.
I am currently Canberra-based at Nation Creative.
